About Us

We are a lively, friendly school for children aged 4 to 11 (Reception to Year 6). Through different means we seek to promote ‘Growth Mindsets’ across the school encouraging children to reach their full potential through effort, persistence, trying different strategies and learning from their mistakes (to find out more about this have a look at the Growth Mindset section on our Information tab). On a day to day basis you’ll discover there is always something fun going on to enhance our already exciting curriculum which strengthens the learning experience of all involved. This might be through competing in the annual conker competition, creating and exploring ancient Greek artefacts, playing with friends in the tag rugby team, learning to dance and sing like a dinosaur or finding new confidence in public speaking. At Sherborne St John Primary School there are many inspirational and unforgettable opportunities for each individual to grow in confidence and learn new life skills, which we believe will stay with them for life.

Sherborne St John Church of England Primary School has been in existence on the present site for over 150 years and now has approximately 110 children in 4 classes.  The school was originally set up to educate the children of the village and today the majority of our pupils still come from the village of Sherborne St John. However we do take some pupils from out of our catchment area and welcome visits from prospective parents. You can find out more about the history of the school if you click on the “History” tab.

Set in beautiful surroundings in the centre of the village we benefit from the use of local facilities, a close relationship with the church, links with our local National Trust property, The Vyne, and a warm local community. The children enjoy making the most of our outside space with its fitness trail, infant sheltered play area, garden and covered eating area.

There is so much more we could share with you about our school, please do get in touch if you are interested to learn more.

Here’s what others have to say about our school…

In the last Ofsted inspection (March 2017) the following comments were made:

“Pupils are well behaved, confident and articulate. They are proud of their school and the leadership roles they can hold. The high quality of teaching across the school means that pupils make good progress.”

For more information please go to Ofsted Reports on this website which links to the school full Ofsted Report.

Below are quotes from visitors to the school:

Mr James Scarborough, Head of Stubbington Study Centre – February 2020
I am writing with feedback following your year 6’s visit here last week. My education team commented on several occasions that your children were a pleasure to teach. They demonstrated fantastic manners, excellent listening skills and wonderful behaviour, setting a great example to the year 5 children from the other schools who were staying with us. They mixed in very well with these children and helped to demonstrate and reinforce our key words of ‘Teamwork, Responsibility and Respect’. A member of my welfare team commented that she was sorry to see your group leave as they were her favourite group to work with… and considering that we work with approx. 100 schools each year, this is high praise.
Such conduct does not happen by chance. Your children do you and your team credit and I believe reflect the effort you all put in to setting high expectations and consistent behaviour management.
We look forward to working with you all again next year.

From Junior Newbury Building Society
“I just thought I would let you know what an absolute pleasure it has been coming to visit Sherborne St John school to promote the JNBS Scheme. The children and staff are so lovely and a pleasure to work with.”

From prospective parent(s) following ambassador tours in Autumn 2017 with two of our school Ambassadors (children from Year 6):

“Brilliant tour of the school, thank you so much to the ambassadors who showed us around, they were so polite and helpful, as were all the children we saw.”

“We thoroughly enjoyed the school visit. The school ambassadors were very informative and cheerful.”

“A fantastic school with friendly staff. The Ambassadors showed me around and I was amazed that children of their age can be so knowledgeable and confident. A school to be proud of and the parents of the pupils here must be very proud. Thank you very much.”
